From the Studio
Paintings by Terry McKelvey
March 5 - April 2, 2010

Vermont from Oxford, 24 x 24 inches, oil on canvas.
The recent paintings by Terry McKelvey on display at the Crary Art Gallery show a surprising diversity of views possible from one studio. McKelvey’s rich, sophisticated use of paint, color and form render his studio a place of many visual intrigues - from views through windows to views of the artist through overlapping mirrors, and from paintings of paintings hung on the walls, to a lonely electric heater and a plastic gorilla in a jumbled still life.
McKelvey’s artistic focus oscillates between larger-scale narrative tableaux, in which he often appears as a stock character, and smaller-scale paintings based directly on his observed nearby surroundings. While these two bodies of work have distinct motifs, they share a common bond in the formal elements and processes that motivate him: using the physical properties of paint to explore the essence of light, interaction of color, and the manipulation of pictorial space.
Terry McKelvey has a BFA in Painting from the Portland School of Art and an MFA in Painting from Cornell University. He is an Associate Professor of Art at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught painting, drawing, and foundations for the past twelve years. He has also taught at Purdue University, University of Maine, and Maine College of Art.
Please join us and the artist in celebrating the opening of the exhibition.
Public reception: Friday, March 5, 6-8pm

Ruff Acres Fine Arts and Antiques
February is an exciting month here at Ruff Acres:
- We would like to introduce our new addition; Carousel Bed and Breakfast at Ruff Acres. The bed and breakfast has two rooms available; both are in the antique shop! In the upstairs is the Water Lilly Room, which has its own little sitting room, a bedroom with a fireplace, and full bath. It has a private entrance with a wrap around deck and view of the pond. The Conewango Room also has its own outside entrance and parking area with a view of the Conewango Creek. The room is introduced by its own foyer and then you open the door to a lavish comfortable suite with large queen size bed, fireplace and a large full bath. Both rooms are furnished with antiques and the Conewango Room has a beautiful lighted stained glass window creating a romantic atmosphere in the evening. A full course home made breakfast is served each morning with coffee, juice, fruit, breads and a main course. Watch for our addition and more rooms in the future.
- Here at the B&B February is Lover’s Month, in honor of Valentine’s Day we invite you to stay at the Bed and Breakfast. Bring your honey and we’ll supply the wine and chocolates, one night reservations will cost only $125, stay two nights for $225, breakfast included.

After Nick passed away in 2004, the antique shop was closed and the stock all sold. Tim and Karen returned to Russell in 2006 and have renovated this 4200 sq. ft. building to display their antiques as you would use them in your home. The grounds are adorned with apple and peach trees as well as two ponds with water lilies and cattails. This is just a beautiful setting for the antique shop and Bed and Breakfast. So, the next time you’re in Russell, come for the night and stay for the day
